A Fair Since 1305
The Benington Village Fair is considered one of the oldest in the region — an historic annual event with traditions dating back to at least 1305. Set in a village with origins tracing to the 8th-century Saxon era, the fair has been part of village life for centuries, with records dating its presence at Benington Lordship back over 700 years.
Historically held every second weekend of July, the fair takes place in the picturesque grounds of Benington Lordship — the site of a former 12th-century Norman castle. It typically features traditional activities such as Maypole dancing, a tug of war, and modern stalls, maintaining its deep-rooted connection to the community's heritage.
The fair continues to maintain its traditional atmosphere as it evolves from a medieval market to the village celebration it is today — a living tradition that connects generations past and present.
Benington Lordship
Benington Lordship is one of the most historically significant estates in Hertfordshire. The house and gardens stand on the site of a former 12th-century Norman castle — built shortly after the Conquest as a fortified stronghold in this part of the county. The remains of the Norman keep and the original moat are still visible today, lending the grounds a remarkable sense of history and atmosphere.
The gardens of Benington Lordship are celebrated in their own right — renowned for their spectacular snowdrop displays in February, their formal rose garden, walled kitchen garden, and ever-changing herbaceous borders. It is a truly special setting for a truly special event.

Saxon Origins
The village of Benington is established during the Saxon era. Its name derives from the Old English Beonna's tun — the settlement of a man named Beonna.

Following the Norman Conquest, a castle is constructed at Benington — a fortified stronghold that would define the landscape for centuries to come.
Benington Castle
The Norman castle at Benington is developed into a significant fortification. The remains of the keep and moat survive to this day within the grounds of Benington Lordship.
